To Desire is to Not Suffer

Updated: Apr 3, 2024

Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen. Desire is the source of your imagined joy, while unfulfilled desires are the source of all misery. People are sometimes taught that they should get rid of their desires, but I disagree. If you focus on getting rid of the desire, it becomes a desire to. So instead of trying to get rid of something you can’t, learn the positive ways to utilize it. The energy of desire is no different than the energy we call life.

Desire is not desiring anything in particular. You cannot decide to progress in life without having the desire to do so. You are reading this now because you wanted to. You eat because you want to. Desire never goes away. When one want is satisfied, another one emerges. This willpower of wanting more is an unbounded goal of ultimate nature. When wanting more, by nature, you're given an unwitting manifestation of your desire to become an unbound person. Therefore, you never need to be concerned about sabotaging your desire since it is indestructible. A desire can also be a reaction to the social situation in which you are living. Your neighbor has a nice car. You may want a nicer one. You see something fascinating on TV and you, too, desire to have that fascinating thing or better.

Desire is a wonderful vehicle that will take you places if you, the navigator, are aware of your purpose of progression. If these desires are based on ego, this is a façade that will eventually have an expiration date or completion. Then misery sits in due to the unfulfillment of these desires. To desire is not to suffer; it’s just a gateway to a progressive state of being. Choose your desires wisely.
